In the 90s as a Canadian PR, one could visit the US without a visa. My university was close to upstate New York – Water Town, Syracuse border. Pre 9/11, the US was a very relaxed country. While driving over on weekends conversation with the American border guards was casual. The usual questions were “country of birth and purpose of visit”. My response was “India and to have fun in Watertown”. Once when I said the same and showed the US Border agent my Student ID card – he jokingly said “Oh, I thought India had only Patels and Singhs”.

So his career has not been easy.
